An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an element's width and height, expressed as W:H. 16:9 (1.78:1) is the standard for HD video, YouTube, and most modern monitors. 4:3 (1.33:1) was the old TV standard and remains common for presentations. 1:1 is the square format (Instagram posts). 9:16 (0.56:1) is vertical video for phone screens, Reels, and Stories.

16:9 is 33% wider than 4:3 at the same height. The transition from 4:3 to 16:9 happened in the 2000s as widescreen TVs became standard. At 1080 pixels tall, 16:9 gives 1920 wide while 4:3 gives 1440 wide. When displaying 4:3 content on a 16:9 screen, you see black bars on the sides (pillarboxing). When 16:9 content is shown on a 4:3 screen, bars appear top and bottom (letterboxing).
