What Is Ideal Body Weight?

Also searched as: ideal weight calculator free | healthy weight for my height | ideal body weight calculator | weight calculator by height Optimized for US users with American units and terminology.

Ideal body weight (IBW) formulas were developed in clinical settings — originally by physicians like Hamwi (1964) and Devine (1974) — to calculate drug dosages based on lean body weight rather than total body weight. They were never intended to define aesthetic or fitness ideals. The formulas are best understood as rough clinical references, not personal weight targets.

Why Do All 5 Formulas Give Different Results?

Each formula uses a different base weight and height increment. The Hamwi formula uses 48 kg for women and 48 kg for men (5'0"), adding 2.7 kg per inch for women and 2.7 kg per inch for men. The Devine formula uses different base values. None account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition — a muscular athlete will appear "overweight" by all of them.

Not necessarily. These formulas don't account for body composition. A more meaningful goal is achieving a healthy body fat percentage (14–24% for men, 21–31% for women) while maintaining muscle mass. A 200 lb athlete with 12% body fat is far healthier than a 160 lb sedentary person at 32% body fat, even though the former is "overweight" by all IBW formulas.
BMI (Body Mass Index) = weight in kg ÷ height in meters squared. It's a population-level screening tool, not an individual health measure. It cannot distinguish muscle from fat — heavily muscled athletes often have "obese" BMIs while having very low body fat. Use body fat percentage alongside BMI for a more complete picture.
