Why Meta Tags Matter for SEO

The title tag is the single most important on-page SEO element. It tells search engines and users what your page is about — it appears as the clickable headline in search results. The meta description doesn't directly affect rankings but significantly impacts click-through rate (CTR). A well-written description can double your organic CTR, which indirectly improves rankings because Google uses CTR as a quality signal. Open Graph tags control how your page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp — critical for social media traffic.

No — Google officially stopped using the meta keywords tag for ranking in 2009. It was heavily abused for keyword stuffing. Bing also ignores it. Yahoo stated it may use it as a spam signal (i.e., having it can hurt you). This tool deliberately omits it. Focus on using your target keywords naturally in the title tag, meta description, headings (H1, H2), and body content instead.
Google truncates title tags at approximately 600 pixels (not characters) — roughly 50–60 characters for standard text. Titles beyond this show '...' in search results. Titles that are too short miss keyword opportunities. The ideal formula: Primary Keyword | Secondary Keyword | Brand Name. Always place the most important keyword near the beginning. Google may rewrite your title if it deems it not descriptive enough for the query.
robots.txt is a server-level file that tells crawlers which pages NOT to crawl (visit). The meta robots tag is page-level and tells crawlers whether to index the page and follow its links. Key difference: robots.txt can prevent crawling but cannot prevent indexing (a blocked page can still be indexed if other sites link to it). For definitive de-indexing, use 'noindex' in the meta robots tag on a crawlable page.
The canonical tag (rel="canonical") tells Google which is the "master" version of a page when duplicate or very similar content exists at multiple URLs. Use it for: paginated content (page 2 pointing to page 1), filtered/sorted URLs (same products, different URL parameters), HTTP vs HTTPS versions, www vs non-www, and syndicated content. Self-referencing canonicals (page pointing to itself) are a best practice even without duplicates.
1200×630 pixels is the universal standard for og:image — it works correctly on Facebook (minimum 1200×630), LinkedIn (1200×627 minimum), Twitter large card (2:1 ratio, minimum 300×157), and WhatsApp. Use JPG format (smaller file size), aim for under 300 KB, and avoid text near the edges (may be cropped on some platforms). The image URL must be absolute (include https://) and publicly accessible without authentication.
