Margin and markup are both ways to express profit, but they use different bases for calculation — and confusing them is one of the most common and costly mistakes in business pricing. Profit margin divides profit by the selling price (revenue). Markup divides profit by the cost. The same dollar amount of profit looks very different depending on which metric you use.

Example: You buy a product for $60 and sell it for $100. Your profit is $40. Your margin is $40 ÷ $100 = 40%. Your markup is $40 ÷ $60 = 66.7%. If you set your prices by targeting a 40% markup when you meant 40% margin, you'll systematically undercharge and earn less profit than planned.

Gross, Operating, and Net Margin Explained

These three margins tell progressively fuller stories about profitability. Gross margin (revenue minus COGS) shows how efficiently you produce or source your product — it's a measure of production efficiency. Operating margin subtracts operating expenses like salaries, rent, and marketing — it shows how efficiently you run the business. Net margin is the bottom line: what remains after interest, taxes, and every other expense. It's the truest measure of overall profitability.

How to Use Target Price Calculation

One of the most practically useful functions in this calculator is the reverse calculation: given a cost and a desired margin, what selling price do you need? The formula is: Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Target Margin). This is NOT the same as adding a markup. If your cost is $80 and you want a 40% gross margin, you need to charge $80 ÷ 0.60 = $133.33, not $80 × 1.40 = $112. The difference — $21.33 per unit — compounds dramatically at scale.

Profit margins vary enormously by industry. Software and SaaS businesses frequently achieve 20–40% net margins due to near-zero marginal costs. Professional services like consulting, law, and accounting run 15–30%. Grocery retail operates at razor-thin 1–3% net margins but makes money on volume. A healthy gross margin depends on your industry. Software companies often achieve 70–80%+ gross margins. Manufacturing typically runs 25–35%. Retail averages 25–50%.
