log (or log₁₀) is the logarithm base 10: log(100) = 2 because 10² = 100. ln (natural logarithm) uses base e (≈2.71828): ln(e) = 1, ln(1) = 0. In science and engineering, ln is more fundamental. In engineering and signal processing, log₁₀ is common (decibels use log₁₀).
