What Is a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP)?
A Systematic Investment Plan, or SIP, is a disciplined investment approach where you invest a fixed amount at regular intervals — typically monthly — into a mutual fund, index fund, or other investment vehicle. Rather than trying to time the market with a large one-time investment, SIP spreads your investment over time, using dollar-cost averaging to reduce the impact of market volatility.
SIP is one of the most popular investment methods globally because it's accessible, flexible, and removes the need to predict market movements. You invest consistently regardless of whether markets are up or down, automatically buying more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high.
How SIP Returns Are Calculated
SIP returns are calculated using the future value of an annuity formula: FV = P × ((1 + r)^n - 1) / r × (1 + r), where FV is the future value (maturity amount), P is the monthly investment, r is the monthly rate of return (annual rate ÷ 12), and n is the total number of monthly payments. This calculator also supports Step-Up SIP, where your monthly contribution increases by a fixed percentage each year.
The Power of Starting Early
Time is the most powerful factor in SIP investing. Investing $500 per month at 12% annual return for 20 years produces a dramatically larger corpus than investing $1,000 per month for 10 years — even though the total amount invested in the second scenario is the same. Starting 5 years earlier can more than double your final corpus at the same rate, thanks to the compounding of returns over additional years.
What Is Step-Up SIP?
A Step-Up SIP (also called Top-Up SIP) allows you to increase your monthly investment amount by a fixed percentage each year — typically aligned with your annual salary increase. For example, starting at $500/month with a 10% annual step-up means you invest $550 in year 2, $605 in year 3, and so on. This significantly boosts your final corpus without requiring a large initial commitment. Use the step-up field in this calculator to see the dramatic difference it makes.
